Transient hepatic nodular lesions associated with patent ductus venosus in preterm infants.

2010

We report on two cases of low-birth-weight preterm infants with patent ductus venosus associated with hepatic hypoechoic lesions of the fourth segment in an otherwise normal liver. Although tumorlike hepatic lesions have been previously reported in association with portosystemic shunts in children and adults, they were never described in preterm infants during physiological patency of ductus venosus. In our patients, hepatic lesions disappeared shortly after the spontaneous ductus closure. Physiopathologic interactions are discussed regarding altered portal blood supply caused by ductus venosus shunt.

Intraportal transplantation of allogenic pancreatic islets encapsulated in barium alginate beads in diabetic rats.

2003

The survival of microencapsulated islets transplanted into the unmodified peritoneal cavity is limited, even if capsular overgrowth is restricted to a minimum, due to an insufficient oxygen supply to the islets. Therefore, research efforts should focus on finding or creating a transplantation site, which permits a closer contact between the encapsulated islets and the blood. For this reason, the liver could be an interesting candidate. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that the intraportal transplantation of allogenic islets encapsulated in small-sized barium alginate beads is safe and succeeds to induce normoglycemia in diabetic rats. The intraportal transplantation o…

Mesenterico-caval shunt in rats

1980

A microsurgical technique for mesenterico-caval shunting in the rat is described. The method results in a partial blood drainage from the upper abdominal content whereas the blood of the mesenteric vein is shunted to the inferior caval vein. Controls were undertaken after 1 and 3 weeks, either visually or radiologically. Twenty-two of 26 surviving animals showed patency of the shunt. All animals had undisturbed blood supply to the portal stump.

Absorption of protein in the early postoperative period in chronic conscious dogs.

1988

Postoperative alterations in amino acid exchange across the intestinal tract and in the capacity for protein absorption were investigated in a chronic canine model. Changes in postoperative splanchnic amino acid exchange consisted of a temporary decrease of total splanchnic amino acid release, including a significant reduction in alanine production, and an increase in glutamine consumption. Contrary to results under stable metabolic conditions, branched chain amino acids were also taken up by the intestine in the early postoperative period. The changes in postoperative amino acid exchange were not, however, reflected by a corresponding alteration in protein transport capacity. The absorptiv…

Formation of Venous Collaterals and Regeneration in the Donor Remnant Liver: Volumetric Analysis and Three-Dimensional Visualization

2009

Abstract Purpose We sought was to quantify and visualize the regeneration of the remnant liver after living donor liver transplantation using computed tomographic (CT) data. Methods For the evaluation of preoperative and follow-up data, we developed a software assistant that was able to compute the volume growth of the remnant liver and liver territories as well as visualize the individual growth of hepatic vessels over time. The software was applied to CT data of 20 donors who underwent right hepatectomy including the middle hepatic vein with at least 3 follow-up examinations in the first year after transplantation. Results After donation of a right lobe graft, the remnant liver regenerate…
